Earlier on the same evening, a workshop was organised, where Mark Iration gave a little talk about how he got into the business and his whole musical background. I managed to capture the first half hour on my iPhone and have uploaded it for your viewing pleasure.

Enjoy!

DMZ @ Vega 09/10/2010

Jannick/JSL og Stanley Most ankom lidt over syv for at lave lydprøve til hans liveset.

Lidt over 8 ankom DMZ: Mala, Coki, Sgt. Pokes... men ingen Loefah. Oh well.

This was before the internet was everywhere, so it was pretty hard to get any info on any of this stuff. I would go out to parties and hear tracks, maybe ask the DJ for the title, and hopefully remember it the next day. If I was really lucky I would find the vinyl record or some CD-compilation with the track later on. Back then the whole thing was still really small as well. Tiny recordlabels with limited pressings, artists that constantly changed names, white labels and an insistance on it being all about the music, instead of faces, places and image.
Anyway, this track showed up on one of the mixtapes Lorenzo regularly made for our crew of partymonsters, and that was THE ONLY PLACE I ever heard it. The tape got lost and I haven't heard it since, 'til I found it on youtube last week, despite searching for it for all these years. I never forgot about it, though. Damn, I love that song.

Next track was another mystery to me. Still no idea who Urban Jungle is.

When I moved to London back in '94, I quickly began listening to Jungle on the pirate radio stations over there, and occasionally recording some of the sets on tape. On one of these tapes, this track showed up. The DJ or MC would occasionally announce what songs were being played, but of course that wasn't the case here, so I had absolutely no idea what this was, and I was too shy and lazy to go around record shops and try and sing the vocal hook to shop assistants, in the hope of finding out more about it. For many years all I had was this one tape with the track. This was also the only tape I would still listen to, if I got near a functioning tape deck.
Next thing that happened was me attending some party about 4-5 years ago, where my man 2000F was billed to play an old school Jungle set. To my immense surprise he dropped this in the middle of his set and I actually cried with joy! Afterwards I obviously asked what the hell it was called, but all he could show me was another white label. Argh!
Finally, Kode9 did a mix for FACT magazine and there it was! Artist, track title and everything!

I'm obviously happy that I finally found these two, but at the same time there's a weird sense of loss. For so many years these songs almost only existed in my head, and there was something mystic, almost magical about them. Especially the Lory D track, since I hadn't heard it at all since about '92. Sometimes i wondered if it really existed, or if it was my drug addled brain playing tricks on me: it could have been a mix of 2 or more tracks or just too much LSD warping my hearing.
Now that I can hear those tracks whenever I want, it doesn't make them bad. They're both amazing tunes that have stood the test of time really well, but the mystery has been lost.

Ignorance will always be bliss.

NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM

As promised, here's a bunch of mixes that have been hyping me up lately.

To set things off with a blast, a bit of Dubstep heavyweight championship bidnizz. Magnetic Man, AKA Benga, Skream & Artwork, on the legendary BBC Essential Mix. 2 hours of proof that these guys are the masters of contemporary raving. Sometimes it sounds like something straight out of 1992, until I listen closer and notice the different rythms, basslines and production values. The overall feeling of full-on euphoria and 'avin' it is the same, though.

Tracklist:

01. Essential Mix – Intro
02. Thanks to Tim Driver for alerting me to this one.

Also includes their brand new single: "I Need Air"

Second course is a bit of Grime, which has been seriously left in the dust by it's once shy cousin Dubstep. For years grime has tried to get out of the underground, but the only people who have crossed overr, like Dizzee rascal and Lady S.O.V., have basically stopped making Grime and done more of a Hip Hop/Pop thing. Not that there's anything wrong with them doing that, but it's very rare to hear them doing any Grime tracks. People like Wiley, who are apparently impossible to work with, aren't really doing the genre any favours either. Wiley also flooded the internet recently by uploading more than 200(!) of his own unreleased tracks, which can be downloaded here.
Anyway, back to the mixes. DTALDN is a nice Grime blog, and DJ Magic has put together an extremely nice mix for them, which you can grab here. Tempa T, Ghetto, Killa P, Badness, Faction G and a whole gang of top notch MCs are on this, spitting over mad beats. I'm amazed that this thing is free, it's THAT good. Thanks to AJ for the tip!

If you feel like chilling out a little tiny bit after that, I don't blame you, so here's some softer, R'n'B flavoured grime from top producer Terror Danjah. He just decided to put his 2007 album/compilation "Shock to the System" up for free download. Get it here. Lots of good stuff on there. Thanks to AJ again!

This last thing I'm having a bit of trouble with. It's by 2000F & JKAMATA, who have been on fire for quite some time now. Together they've been producing and remixing up a storm with their unique blend of sleazy 80's Funk/Soul and dubstep. Their latest remix of Low Pressure: "Babylon Big Time" is a monster. 2000F is also a part of the invincible OHOI!, who together with some others put on the yearly RAW event here in Copenhagen. This year, the people behind Raw have decided to promote the event with a series of mixes put together by some of the DJs playing on the night, called The RAW Tapes. 2KF and Kamata somehow decided that they had to contribute a NINE HOUR LONG MIX, taking in most of their influences, favourite tunes and some of their own tracks along the way. Nine. Fucking. Hours. The tracklist for this musical Leviathan is just stupidly long, but contains nothing but straight up goodness. Soul, Funk, Jazz, Electro, Hip Hop, Techno, Ghetto Bass, Jungle, House, Dubstep, R'n'B, etc.... It's all right here.
I repeat: nine hours. What's wrong with these people? Make sure you free up about 800MB on your iPod.
If you're wondering how they did it, they first recorded tunes from vinyl into Ableton Live for 4 days. After that they spent another week piecing it all together: freezing it down from 173(!) tracks, rendering for 2 nights into 4 different .wav files, since they can max. be 2GB each, then splicing those together, converting to mp3, and finally lots of trial and error trying to find a place to upload and host it all. Labour of love!

Happy listening!

Guts for garters.

I've been wanting to do a post about some of the female MCs in Grime for a long time. For a while, back in the beginning of this millenium, it almost seemed like Grime was going to be the first genre with a 1:1 ratio of the sexes. Not that I really care what sex the person I'm listening to is, but it was a bit interesting back then, that there were so many women all of a sudden, that were actually really good!

Anyway, there was a whole bunch of women popping up back then and coming real hard on the lyrical front. I've picked out a few of the more interesting ones.

First of all there was Ms. Dynamite. I've mentioned her in a post before, but she deserves another mention. She's still one of my favourites and has made a bit of a comeback recently on the UK Funky scene. Haven't heard anything yet that equals her old stuff, though. Here's one of her slightly harder old tracks.

Ms. Dynamite: Ramp

Next up is the other one that crossed over to the mainstream: Lady Sovereign.
Before she got wrung through Jay-Zs Roc-A-Fella media hype machine and we all constantly got reminded about her age and sex, she was just a really dope MC who could easily compete with the best. A prime example is this track here, which I found on the first Channel U compilation. She merks man dem.

Madasyn f/t Frost P & Zoz Rock, MC Shystie and Lady Sovereign: The Battle

...which rather conveniently brings us to Shystie. Don't really know too much about her, apart from the fact that she was another young female who just ripped things. Here's a little freestyle from Tim Westwoods show:

I always used to confuse Shystie with Lady Stush, but I promise I won't ever do that again. "Dollar Sign" was BIG, yo!

Lady Stush: Dollar Sign

Here's a newer freestyle from Logan Samas show on BBC Radio:

I obviously saved the best for last: No Lay. She's also the main reason I wanted to do this post in the first place. The amount of energy, emotion and aggression she puts in some of her tracks is just off the charts. One of the few MCs that can give me goosebumps. It's a real shame she didn't do more tracks back then, but i found some newer mixtapes by her here. I also found som choice clips of her on youtube, starting of with a more hiphop track where she just never stops.

No Lay: Bars of Truth

Some thing she did for the BBC. Straight shivers.

And finally the track that introduced me to her. This is just all-out war. Right from the first line: "How these boys gonna chat 'bout Berettas, when you neva had a metal tucked unda your sweata?", she never let's up on her no-holds-barred assault on every other MC out there, and walks away victorious. Every bar is quote worthy, her pronunciation is crystal clear despite the tempo and heavy accent, and the aggression just cannot be stopped. For years I only had the 12", but the video actually makes the whole thing even better.

No Lay: Unorthodox Daughter

That's it for now. No more drugs, including alcohol, and instead a whole bunch of healthy stuff like.... well basically all the stuff I did before, just without the drugs.

This is, of course, the main reason why my blog has been dead: lots of therapy and brain readjustment. The other reason is pure lazyness. Fo a while I thought people could just follow me on facebook, but I've realised that stuff just drowns in peoples newsfeed, and not everyone reads EVERYTHING on the internet every day like I do. So now I've started to feel the need to preserve stuff for coming generations here on trusty old blogger.com again.

Enjoy!

He Writeth The Truth!

Der bli'r droppet seriøse knowledgebomber herovre.

Everything was better in the old days.

My man Klaus B has dished out a 2 hour mix of : "old skool Chicago/Detroit/Belgisk støvsuger/Acid/Bleep/UK Breakbeat/Rave/Techno osv. Most of it still sounds fresh today!

Platinum 45 feat. More Fire Crew.: OI! Is this the song that gave us OHOI!? According to a recent interview, it just might be. This is one of the first songs where it becomes very clear that something is happening with UKG. This is way more aggressive than your usual MJ Cole/Artful Dodger fare, the 2-step rythms have been thoroughly mangled and the bassline cuts through everything. Notice Lethal B, who would later go solo...

...with the even more aggressive POW! (Forward Riddim). This is of course the song that allegedly was banned from a large number of venues across the UK for causing fights wherever it was played. Still a good tune though.

Pay As U Go Cartel: Champagne Dance. A rare chance to see Wiley before he splintered off from the UKG scene, started Roll Deep and his solo career. He was on point back then already.

Wiley: Wot U Call It? asked the question on everybody's lips back then. Rephlex Records brought out the 2 Grime compilations, which were basically mostly dubstep, Wiley was trying to convince people it was called eski beat, and other people were talking about dark garage, breakstep, UKG, etc. Eventually grime stuck.

Sticky ft. Ms. Dynamite: Booo! This was just a massive anthem. Shame that Dynamite rarely flexes her toasting skills. Paved the way for Lady Sov, Shystie, No Lay, M.I.A. and a bunch of others.

So Solid Crew: 21 Seconds. Arguably the track that started it all by decidedly shifting the focus from the DJ/producer to the MC's. The Wu-tang of UKG that imploded in a flurry of violence allegations, halfbaked solo albums and the slow rise of dubstep and grime.

The police is just up there!".

Check Ras' version her.

Novelty alert!

We'll probably all be sick of this in about 10 minutes, but it's pretty fun for now.

Teh Metalz.

Been wanting to do a post for a while with old heavy metal and hard rock classics that some people might have forgotten about, so here we go.

Judas priest: Victim of Changes from their Sad Wings of Destiny album. A suitably pompous title for an equally epic song, showcasing all their strengths: Halfords outrageous vocal stylings, Downing and Tiptons tight riffs and solos, and also a slightly unusual dynamic range. from soft and emo to absolutely raging in less than 8 minutes. British steel FTW!

Next is Black Sabbath: Never Say die. This is a version from Ozzy's Speak of the Devil live album, which is basically all Black Sabbath songs played by the Ozzsters pretty freakin' awesome band. Lyrics about coming home drunk and being scared that your wife will kill you are cool, especially if you get them over and done with in about 2 seconds and then just proceed to riff out for the rest of the song. OHOI! had him over for a party in 2003 or 2004, I forget, and it was just mental to have this hero of ours play to about 100-200 people in Basement next to Vega. For a while he drifted out of the scene, but has returned recently with his old partner: El-B. Together they ran the Ghost record label, which released some of the proto-dubstep stuff, a lot of it with El-B on production. El-B wandered off for a while too, but came back about the same time as J-Da. Hatcha hopefully needs no introduction. Let's just say that he was a massive influence on Benga & Skream and is still widely regarded as one of the very best DJ's in the genre. To have all three of them at once with good ol' Crazy D over the top is just too good. I haven't even listened to all of it and I'm just gushing. If this doesn't get you going, you're doing it wrong.

Get the goods here courtesy of Get Darker, which is a treasure trove of mixes and info, by the way.

Your chest!

Extra! Sure, there's still plenty of bangers on here, but he takes it to another level. BIG MIX!
Get it here.

- Macabre Unit threw some summervibes together a while back. Not technically brilliant, a few dodgy mixes here and there, but the tracks make up for it. Nice to hear som old 2-step again!
Get it here.

- The old 2-step sound is generally becoming quite popular again in dubstep circles. Here's a mix with Martyn and TRG from Rob da Banks' show on BBC Radio.

Tracklist:

Martyn Mix
Martyn – ‘Natural Selection’ (3024)
Kloke – ‘Basement’ (Entrada Recordings)
Millie & Andrea – ‘Black Hammer’ (Daphne001)
Uncle Bakongo – ‘Makonde’ (Roska Kicks And Snares)
Apple – ‘Seigalizer’ (Slim Ting)
Hard House Banton – ‘Reign’ (SRE)
Efdemin – ‘Acid Bells Martyns Dark Mix’ (Curle)
Martyn – ‘Elden St.’ (3024)
Karizma – ‘Groove ‘A’kordingly’ (R2 Records)
2000 And One – ‘Funk That’ (100% Pure)
Adam Marshall – ‘Rose Mountain’ (Cynosure)
Martyn – ‘Bridge’ (3024)
Goldie – ‘Truth Ft. Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of good stuff, but there's an evergrowing amount of incredibly boring wobbletracks coming out. This doesn't come as a complete surprise, as this is what generally happens in the evolution of musicgenres. As soon as a formula has been established, everybody jumps onboard and "gives it their own twist", which sounds exactly the same as what everybody else is doing. Boooooring.
So where to now? Some people have started taking the BPM's down to 120-130 again, which at first horrified me, as I thought it would just end up in the same bland soup that techno and house have been in for ages, but I've heard some absolutely brilliant stuff from, amongst others, Hyperdub, Tempa and Hessle Audio. The tempo might be slower, but they keep the rythmic syncopations, bass and blatant disregard for the norm from dubstep. Fresh!

The other possibility is UK Funky House. Apart from having one of the worst names, this genre is finally starting to show some promise. The inclusion of soca rythms, grime MC's and just a general openness to all kinds of influences is slowly tickling my interest and this might be the genre to watch. So far it has produced 2 tunes i really rate, especially this summer.

First up is Maxwell D vs. Lil Silva: Blackberry Hype. Some of you might remember Maxwell from his days in So Solid Crew or just as an original UK garage Don. Anyways, he's back with a banger and some incredibly silly lyrics.

When 2000F dropped his "2000 Hype" dubplate special at Vega for the Benga gig, the whole place exploded. 'Nuff said.

Next tune is from grime masters Boy Better Know: Too Many Man. Finally it has dawned on some grime MC's that their constant verbal assaults and big boy posturing might just scare a few females away from their shows/raves. I definitely think that that is one of the main reasons for X amount of MC's jumping on the funky bandwagon... that and money, of course. Anyway, this track really gets me going. If you hear the chorus while you're out and about in CPH, it's probably me shouting it.

In other news, the biggest grime tune in ages. Tempa T/Tempz: Next Hype, the energy levels on this track are just off the chart. Quite a fun little video too with atrocious acting courtesy of UK hiphop legend Tim Westwood. You should have all seen this a million times by now, but here it is for the late bloomers.

I've also had a sweet spot for this little dancehall ditty, Laden: Inna Life. First time round it didn't do a whole lot for me, but the quirky production and housey pianos kept me coming back until the chorus embedded itself. Thanks to JG from Firehouse Sound for the tip!

As the boring city dweller that I've become, I didn't do any of the big festivals so far, but then again, the line-ups for Roskilde and Fusion weren't THAT impressive and it mostly sounds like I missed out on a hell of drug and alcohol bingeing, which hasn't really been that tempting since '95. One thing I did miss out on was the reunion of Malk De Koijn, but thanks to Ras Dollars, there's a link to DR's soundboard recording of the concert here.

Another thing i missed at Roskilde was the "friendly fire" soundclash between Universal Soundsystem, Rootsman Hi-Fi, Firehouse Sound and Kali-Ma. The best thing about this has got to be the VERY entertaining thread (in danish) on the dancehall.dk forum. Firehouse is also streaming audio from the clash on their homepage.

Finally, for those of you wondering about the title of this post, check this clip at approx. 6:12

For those of you who don't know this movie, watch it now. I've started riding my longboard full-time gain and if that wasn't enough, man dem like 2000F has just put up the fourth installment of his amazing King of de Dubs series of mixes and to top it all off he comes on all heavy with my personal spring anthem, Turboweekend: Something or Nothing (2000F & JKamata Remix) in a special VIP Version. The track is likely to ride on the waves of their last hit, the seminal 2000F & JKamata: You Don't Know What Love Is on the Hyperdub label, as their shared love of early 80's soul and funk shines through heavily once again, with added 00's bass and rythm sensibilities and a surprisingly soulful vocal from Turboweekends vocalist. The rest of the tracklist is, as usual, stuffed with unreleased goodies from some of the prime movers on the dubstep scene, spanning the entire spectrum of bassheavy sounds. From smooth and chilled to full-on, hard, wobble steel. Wonkers beware!

Anyway, on with the show.

2000F - King Of De Dubs IV - April 2009

tracklist:
Turboweeked - Something or Nothing (2000F & JKamata Remix VIP) [dub] Joker & Ginz - Purple City [dub]
Von D - Show Me [dub]
Silkie - Test [dub]
Goth-Trad - Cutend [dub]
Simien & Obeah feat. On todays show he had brought along his DJ buddy JB who played an excellent set that included a brand new Skream remix of one of my alltime favourite Distance tunes, Night Visions, from his debutalbum for the Planet Mu label, My Demons. This remix is just jawdroppingly awesome, and as soon as I find some audio clips of it, I'll update this post. At the very least, Reveal should be posting a recording of todays Sub.fm show, and I'll be linking to that.

Speaking of Reveal, don't forget his new club, Skank, at Rust which tonight has 2000F ripping the CDJ's apart. Last time the club was a definite success and as if the bass last time wasn't enough, this time there should be coming extra subs in tonight, just for good measure.

You can also catch yours truly spinning a very wide variety of pleasantly good and stupid music, not just dubstep, tonight AND tomorrow night at Simpelt V, Istedgade 96.

'Nuff interwebz, back to the sunshine!

The Dirtbombs.

Ever since my old boss at Soundstation introduced me to this band I've been listening to them very regularly and they are still some of my favourite rock albums, almost 10 years later. Mick Collins is a bit of a legend as far as Detroit rock goes and you may also wanna check out some of his other projects, he's done about 50.000.000 of them. Dirtbombs is definitely the band I like best, though, especially the second and third studio albums: "Ultraglide in Black" and "Dangerous Magical Noise".

Ultraglide is all covers of old rock and soul songs (Stevie Wonder, Thin Lizzy) played in the typically shambolic Dirtbombs style. How do they actually sound? Really bad, actually. None of them are particularly good at their instruments, but the thing that shines through is their WILL to play this stuff, no matter what. They really love what they're doing and that's an extremely contagious quality. Stevie Wonders' "Livin' for the City" constantly sounds like it's completely falling apart, covered in fuzz and nobody seems to be hitting any of their notes anywhere NEAR clean, but the enthusiasm and soul they put into it is awesome. That's basically how every song on the album is, although the band actually do have quite a wide range of expression, from slow and grinding to fast and choppy. Not a dull song on the whole album.

Magical Noise is mostly songs penned by Mick and is absolutely stunning. The band is slightly tighter, but still loud and abrasive, the production is slightly cleaner, but still with massive amounts of fuzz and the quality of the songs is really, really good. Mick sings his heart out on "F.I.D.O.", "Stuck in thee Garage" is some of the most distorted, screechy rock ever and "I'm Through with White Girls" is straight up sleaze. Essential purchase.

I found some live vids on youtube, but the sound quality is even worse than on record, but it should give you an idea.

"Stop" from "Dangerous Magical Noise":

"Underdog" from "UltraGlide in Black":

Notice that the live band has 2 drummers and 2 bass players, just to give it that little bit extra.

And finally a cute little interview, enjoy!

OMFG!!!

Put a wonk on it.

It all started out as a good idea. "Get a blog!", I thought. "No more copy/paste and no repetitions!" gave me a warm feeling inside and starting the blog gave me that glow only pregnant women and PCP addicts radiate. But home is where the hatred is, so the feelings of joy and hippiedom were rather shortlived and several friends immediately pointed out that the whole thing felt a bit fake without any REAL emotion.
Cut. Chase. Action.

For a while now, some people have been using the term "Wonky" to describe certain areas of popular music. In itself, this poses no real threat to me and I could just ignore the fact that people I like or respect are using this word to pigeonhole parts of music I love. Luckily, I'm not that kind of guy.

"Wonky", according to inventor Martin Clark, is a theme, NOT a genre. I really like his writing and music and respect him an' all, but why oh why does he have to invent this stuff? What's the point? Basically, as far as I can see, "Wonky" means: dance music with big midrange/treble synth leads. The few people that use the term usually do so in conjunction with artist names like Joker, Rustie, Zomby, Flying Lotus, a bunch of 8-bit people and apparently the Skweee man dem. Even though these people have probably heard of each other and some of them actually work together, They have very little in common, except for the use of big, trebly synth leads over dance beats that involve BOTH bass AND beats. Historically this has obviously been done a million times before. Think Dr. Dre.: "The Chronic" or just go straight to one of many sources: George Clinton. But apparently, Clinton and Dre are not "Wonky". Wonkieness can only be achieved at the end of the 00's and again only by the artists mentioned above. Since Blackdown invented the term, I have very rarely seen additions to this "theme". In fact, only some of the Skweee people have been lumped in and I'm sort of guessing that is mostly so that they have more adjectives to think about. Basically, "Wonky" is an adjective, just like "hard", "funky" and other words you don't want to put in front of "house". This sort of brings us to the whole point: There is none. Wonky is just a very crappy way of describing very little. At least when you say "hard", people are gonna guess that you mean something with some banging drums or harsh synths. When you say "wonky", people who haven't read Mr. Clark should walk away from your conversation and the ones that have read it should just slap you 'til you promise never to do it again, wonker.

Next issue on The Agenda Of Hate: Donk.

Donk recently rose to fame through the pages of Vice magazine. When I first saw the article and accompanying documentary, I was convinced that this was some elaborate and very well-made spoof. It took several re-readings, google searches and youtubeings before I even began to grasp the horror. I'm actually still waiting/hoping for someone to expose this hoax. It would make this world a better place.

Since I first heard it, I've been consumed by an extreme amount of hate. So much so, that I began questioning my own emotions and gut reactions. Why do I hate this SO much? It's just a bunch of no-future-having, steroid-taking, bad-music-taste-having kids? What have they done to me? Answer: They invented the word "Donk" and plastered it across even more crappy euro dance. As if that wasn't enough, they also rap/MC over the top of it.

On paper it all looks good: pissed off lower class youth, electronic dance music, rap = usually the start of new and vibrant genres (think hiphop, grime, jungle, etc.). Not the case. This is just pure crap.

Unfortunately, a lot of people I know and usually respect, seem to think that this is the next big thing or just some harmless fun. I tell these people that they are wrong and that they should stop worshipping false gods before the Lord Almighty smites them with AIDS.

The absolutely worst thing is that the main song of the genre, Blackout Crews "Put A Donk On It" is so infectious and downright fucking stupid, that a part of me cannot help but like it. A very small part of my heart that is probably a tumor waiting to happen. BUT I don't like it in a musical way, for this is not music. More in the way that I love watching Bud Spencer slap somebody on the top of their head so they sink 20 cm in to the sand. Yes, I feel guilty after giggling.

So there you have it. I absolutely hate the term "Wonky" to describe music and "Donk" just isn't an option. This post doesn't make that much sense, but that's the beauty of hate, it doesn't have to make sense. In fact, it's an emotion, so you just have to feel it. Next stop: Iceland.

EDIT: More fuel for my fire. Wonky should be thrown down a flight of stairs.

Fugzi Malone: Stand Out

Info + meget andet her, check især mixsektionen.

Det første og, i mine øjne, bedste er Laroux: In for the Kill (Skreams Let's Get Ravey Remix)

Rump Recordings supplerer lige op med bl.a.
